Sporting Legends - Ayrton Senna by Stuart McIntyre. Ayrton Senna da Silva is widely regarded as the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time. He was born on 21st March 1960 in Sao Paulo, Brazil and began Kart racing at the age of 13. In 1984, Senna drove the Toleman Hart TG184 in his first ever Formula 1 season and his exceptional talent was immediately apparent. He achieved his first Grand Prix victory in 1985 driving the Lotus 97T Renault and in 1988 he joined McLaren to drive the Marlboro McLaren MP4/6 Honda. Ayrton Senna then began a period of domination in the sport and won the Drivers World Championship three times - 1988, 1990 and 1991. In 1994, Senna moved to the Rothman Williams team to drive the Williams Renault FW16, but sadly in only his third race, he was tragically killed at the San Marino Gran Prix, Imola on 1st May 1994. Truly, a legend of his time. |

In 1988, the power lay with McLaren and Senna linked up with Ron Dennis to drive the McLaren MP4/6 Honda and was crowned world champion three times; 1988, 1990 and 1991. Then in 1994 when Williams held by far the best chance of a fourth world championship, Ayrton Senna made his move and drove the Williams Renault FW16.
