Clipped Signature - Alfred Hutchinson. Joined the Royal Marines aged 17 to serve in the Great War. He was selected for the assault to blockade Zeebrugge, going aboard the Mersey ferry Iris. With huge loss of life around him, he survived the assault but was wounded and invalided in 1919. He worked in the newsprint industry, retiring in 1976 and lived to more than 100 years of age. Clipped Signature - Thomas P York-Moore. An airship commander in World War One, he commanded Coastal class airship C-9 after it had been so devastatingly commanded by his predecessor, James G Struthers who sank seven U-boats. Employed in the role of anti-submarine patrols, these airships significantly reduced the threat from the German U-boats. Clipped Signature - T E Guttery. Joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1912 and was a founder member of No.5 Sqn sent to France in WW1. He survived the entire war, ending it with No.25 Sqn RAF. He flew three tours in the Middle East with No.8 Sqn and No.55 Sqn, and served in non-combat roles in WW2. Clipped Signature - Philip Fullard. Served with No.1 Sqn flying the Nieuport 17 from May 1917. By that November he had scored 40 victories, making him the sixth highest scoring British Ace of the war. He remained in the RAF until 1946, retiring as Air Commodore with the DSO, MC and Bar, AFC and a CBE. He died in 1984. We have just one of this rare signature available. The source of the signature is an item we believe was signed in 1972 to mark the 60th anniversary of No.1 Sqn. The item - an envelope - was flown from from Bailleul in France where No.1 Sqn operated to RAF Wittering, the base of the Harriers of No.1 Sqn in 1972. It was flown in Harrier XW923 on 8th May 1972. Clipped Signature - Sir Hugh Chance. Joined the Worcestershire Regiment in 1915 but signed up for the Royal Flying Corps in April 1916. He was sent to France to fly Martinsyde G.100 Elephants with No.27 Sqn and on 17th September was hit and forced to land. He was taken prisoner until the end of the war, and was a director of lighthouse engineers Chance Brothers until 1964. He died in 1981. Clipped Signature - William Hall. Born at Rotherhithe in 1898, he joined the Royal Naval Air Service in June 1916 and flew as a navigator in Handley Page 0/400 heavy bombers of No.16 Sqn RNAS (later No.216 Sqn RAF) on bombing operations against industrial targets in Germany. After the Great War, he joined BP Shell as an accountant, serving for 50 years. During the Second World War he served in Balloon Command of the Royal Air Force. Clipped Signature - Alexander Gray. A private in the Highland Light Infantry in World War One, he moved to the Royal Flying Corps and commanded No.55 Sqn in 1917, then commaned No.12 Sqn RAF after the war. Holding this position until May 1926, he took up senior roles in the RAF and Air Ministry, retiring in 1949. He died in 1980. Clipped Signature - George Kimbell. Served aboard submarine K17 and survived what was known as the Battle of May Island - a series of collisions in misty darkness which left K class submarines K4 and K17 sunk, and several vessels damaged. One of only 8 survivors of the sinking of K17, by 1987 George was the last remaining crew member of the submarine. Clipped Signature - John Townesend. An Observer in the RE7 aircraft with No.21 Sqn from 1915 to 1916, he was taken prisoner just a month after transferring to No.60 Sqn in March 1916. Clipped Signature - Guy Botwright. Joined the Labour Corps in 1915, a forerunner of the Army Service Corps, and served in France attached to several regiments. He fought at Cambrai, Arras and Amiens where he was wounded and repatriated, working with Schroders Bank post war. Clipped Signature - John Trafford. Joined the 9th King's Liverpool Regiment in 1915, fought and was injured at the battle of Loos and was repatriated. He then fought with the Monmouthshire Regiment at Third Ypres and was wounded again. He became an ambulance driver after WW1, serving as such from 1926 and throughout WW2 and beyond. Clipped Signature - Ted Rimmer. Born in 1898, he joined the King's Own Liverpool Regiment at the age of 18. He served at Arras, the Somme, Third Ypres, Passchendaele and Amiens with the 6th Battalion. Post-war he joined the Liverpool Police Force, serving there throughout World War Two. Clipped Signature - Norman Macmillan. This signature is from a piece of memorabilia which was flown in a Buccaneer in the 1970s. The Pilot and Navigator of that Buccaneer also signed the item. Norman Macmillan - Served in the first World War as a private in the Highland Light Infantry, then after a year in the trenches transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, flying the Sopwith 1 and a half Strutter and Camel with No.45 Sqn. Awarded the Military Cross, he had scored 9 victories before a flying accident saw him return to the UK out of action. After the war he became an instructor and test pilot, becoming Chief Test Pilot at Fairey Aviation. He died in 1976. A J Carolan - Buccaneer pilot with No.12 Sqn RAF in the 1970s. Clipped Signature - George Smith. George Smith enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1917 and fought on the Western Front with the Royal Naval Division, then posted to Greece and the Near East. He remained in the Royal Marines and served a total of 28 years before he was demobilised in 1945 after seeing action in World War Two. He served on board HMS Colossus, HMS Eagle, HMS Repulse and HMS Ganges. He was latterly decorated with the Legion d'Honneur as one of the survivors of the Great War. Clipped Signature - Ferdinand West VC. Transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916, and in 1918 was with No.8 Sqn flying the Armstrong Whitworth FK8 when he was awarded his Victoria Cross. He discovered the location of the German ground reserves and crucially got the information back to the Army, despite suffering a severe leg wound from enemy fighters. Clipped Signature - Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman. Served in WW1 with No.10 Sqn RFC flying FK8s and Bristol Fighters. Flew many types of aircraft as a test pilot in the 1920s before a tour with No.99 Sqn. As a Wing Commander in WW2 flew one mission as second pilot of a Lancaster in May 1944 but was shot down and captured - the highest ranking officer to be captured during the war. He died in 1978. Clipped Signature - James G Struthers. Born in 1885, he was an airship commander in World War One. He flew the Coastal class airship C-9 from RNAS Mullion from 1916 to combat the threat of U-boats, Struthers and his crew claimed seven of them sunk. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and two Bars. He died in 1979. Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures. |
Clipped Signature - Stanley de Courcy-Ireland. Graduated as a Midshipman in 1915 joining HMS Bellerophon in 1916 - he was in charge of Q Turret at the Battle of Jutland. Debris from HMS Vanguard landed on his turret when it blew up in July 1917, and he survived the sinking of HMS Pellow in 1918. Remaining with the Navy, he served on HMS Westcott, HMS Venomous, HMAS Cerberus, HMS Frobisher, HMS Furious, HMS Argus, HMS Hermes, HMS Courageous, and HMS Glorious. At the beginning of WW2 he was second in command of HMS Newcastle, then commanded the land station HMS Owl. He later commanded HMS Ajax, retiring from the Navy in 1951. He died in 2001. Clipped Signature - Donald Hodge. Born in 1894, he enlisted in September 1914 and fought throughout the Great War. At the Somme, he was a Lance Corporal in the Queen's Own West Kent Regiment attached as Orderly and Runner to Captain Fleming of 55th Brigade. In WW2 he was an Air Raid Warden, joined the Home Guard and then was an anti-aircraft gunner in the Royal Artillery. He lived to at least 100 years old. Clipped Signature - Reginald Wild. Enlisted in the Sussex Yeomanry in 1914, he was sent to Gallipoli fighting in the trenches with 42 Division. Here he contracted dysentery and was repatriated. In 1917 he rejoined what was now 16th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, serving in Palestine and then the Western Front. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1918, and after the war joined the family business.
