Clipped Signature - Maureen Stevens.

A Radio Operator in the tower at RAF Scampton, she was on duty on the night of 16th-17th May 1943, where she talked home the survivors of the famous Dambusters raid. She died in 2017.


Clipped Signature - David Shannon.

Australian David Shannon joined the Royal Australian Air Force as a pilot in 1941 and had flown a tour with No.106 Sqn before joining No.617 Sqn for the Dambusters Raid. Flying Lancaster AJ-L he was the first to attempt the difficult attack on the Eder dam, eventually getting his bomb away after several attempts. It struck the dam but failed to cause a breach, although the dam would be destroyed by the following Lancasters. He flew in the Mosquito for a third tour and worked in the oil industry post war. He died in 1993.

Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures.



Clipped Signature - George Chalmers.

A wireless operator on Whitleys, Stirlings and Halifaxes before he joined the famous No.617 Sqn flying on Lancasters. Flying on AJ-O on the Dambusters raid, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. Later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for 65 operations, he stayed on with the RAF and then Ministry of Defence until 1984. He died in 2002.


Clipped Signature - Raymond Grayston.

Flew with No.50 Sqn before joining No.617 Sqn as the Flight Engineer of Lancaster AJ-N piloted by Les Knight on the Dambusters raid. His aircraft breached the Eder Dam. Later he was shot down and imprisoned from September 1943 until liberation. He died in 2010.


Clipped Signature - Edward Johnson.

Served with No.50 and No.106 Sqn before joining No.617 Dambuster Sqn. He was the bomb aimer on Lancaster AJ-N which attacked the Mohne Dam then breached the Eder, earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross. Shot down later that year, he evaded capture for two months to return to England via Holland, France, Spain and Gibraltar. He died in 2002.


Clipped Signature - Frederick Sutherland.

Known as 'Doc', Frederick Sutherland was front gunner on Lancaster AJ-N piloted by Les Knight during the Dambusters raid by No.617 Sqn. Later shot down, he evaded capture with the help of the Resistance. He died in 2019.


Clipped Signature - Grant S McDonald.

Flew with the legendary No.617 Sqn on the famed Dambusters raid as the rear gunner in Lancaster ED918 AJ-F. As part of the third wave they attacked the Sorpe Dam, damaging three trains with gunfire on the way to their target. He died in 2012.


Clipped Signature - George 'Johnny' Johnson.

Served with No.97 Sqn before joining the famous No.617 Sqn for the Dambuster raid. A bomb-aimer on Lancaster AJ-T, his aircraft successfully attacked the Sorpe Dam. Retired after 22 years of service, becoming a teacher. The last surviving Dambuster, he died aged 101 in 2022.


Clipped Signature - Kenneth Lucas.

Bomber Command ground crew who served with No.49 Sqn before moving to No.617 Squadron. As ground crew, he played a crucial role in preparing the Lancaster bombers for the Dambusters Raid. He died in 2011.


Clipped Signature - Ken Brown.

Joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and by 1943 was a pilot in No.617 Sqn Royal Air Force. For Operation Chastise, the Dambusters Raid of 16th/17th May 1943, he was Captain and Pilot of Lancaster ED918 AJ-F 'F for Freddie' as it shot up trains and bombed the Sorpe Dam. He died in 2002. Joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and by 1943 was a pilot in No.617 Sqn Royal Air Force.
