Clipped Signature - Sidney Webster.

A high speed test pilot in the Royal Air Force, he was the pilot who flew the Supermarine S5 to win the Schneider Trophy for Great Britain in 1927, the first of three victories to win the trophy outright for the country. He retired from the RAF as Air Vice Marshal in 1950. He died in 1984.

Clipped Signature - Hugh Merewether.

Taught to fly by the US Navy in WW2, he joined Hawker as a test pilot in 1954, becoming Chief Test Pilot in 1967. Glide-landed a damaged P.1127 jet at high-speed and was awarded the OBE. He died in 2006.


Clipped Signature - Sir Humphrey Edwardes-Jones.

An original member of Cambridge University Air Squadron, he then flew Avros and Snipes with the RAF. He spent three years in Cairo before becoming a test pilot - he flew the prototype Spitfire in 1936. He commanded No.213 Sqn with Gladiators and Hurricanes before taking on senior roles in the RAF. He retired an Air Vice Marshal in 1961. He died in 1987.

Clipped Signature - Gerd Achgelis.

A German aircraft engineer and aerobatic pilot, in the mid 1930s he was Chief Test Pilot at Focke-Wulf. He and Professor Focke designed the first ever helicopter, the Fw61, in 1938. After the war, he stayed in the aviation industry, occasionally performing aerobatics into the 1980s. He died in 1991 aged 82.

Clipped Signature - Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman.

Served in WW1 with No.10 Sqn RFC flying FK8s and Bristol Fighters. Flew many types of aircraft as a test pilot in the 1920s before a tour with No.99 Sqn. As a Wing Commander in WW2 flew one mission as second pilot of a Lancaster in May 1944 but was shot down and captured - the highest ranking officer to be captured during the war. He died in 1978.

Clipped Signature - Geoffrey Tyson.

A renowned test pilot, he performed aerobatics and was an instructor before World War Two, became a test pilot for various companies between 1937 and 1958. He tested aircraft such as the Sunderland and Stirling and the gigantic Saunders-Roe Princess flying boat, becoming Chief Test Pilot at Short Brothers. He died in 1987.

Clipped Signature - Pat Fillingham.

A test pilot who worked for the de Havilland company, he flew more than 120 different types of aircraft, including wartime work on the Mosquito. He became Chief Production Test Pilot in 1959, retiring in 1975. He died in 2003.

Clipped Signature - David Lockspeiser.

An RAF jet pilot flying Vampires and Meteors, he joined Hawker in 1955 as a test pilot, flying aircraft including the Hunter and Buccaneer. In all, he flew over 90 types of aircraft. He died in 2014.


Clipped Signature - Neville Duke.

Flew Spitfires with No.92 Sqn in WW2 then became a test pilot with Hawker. He claimed the world air speed record in a Hawker Hunter in 1953, but was injured in a later forced landing. He wrote several books on aviation. He died in 2007.


Clipped Signature - Peter Cadbury.

A member of the Cadbury family known for the chocolate brand, he never worked in the family business. He is the son of Sir Egbert Cadbury, a World War One Ace who shot down two German zeppelins. Peter followed his father into aviation and was a test pilot on jet fighters during World War Two, including the Gloster Meteor. He died in 2006.

Clipped Signature - Richard L Jones.

Posted to No.64 Sqn flying Spitfires in July 1940, he fought in the Battle of Britain. He moved to No.19 Sqn in October 1940 and was shot down by Me109s over Kent. Post war he became a test pilot for De Havilland and was involved in the motor industry. He died in 2012.


Clipped Signature - Duncan Simpson.

A jet pilot with No.222 Sqn RAF from 1949, he joined Hawker as a test pilot in 1954. Instrumental in the development of the Hunter, Harrier and Hawk aircraft, he became Chief Test Pilot in 1970 and retired from flying in 1978. He died in 2017.


Clipped Signature - Eric 'Winkle' Brown.

A record breaking test pilot, he holds the world record for most types of aircraft flown, most carrier landings and is the most decorated pilot of the Fleet Air Arm. A legend in aviation, he has written several biographies of his life and career. He died in 2016.


Clipped Signature - Wendelin Trenkle.

Chief Test Pilot at Messerschmitt in the key years from the development of the Me109 through to the end of the war and the Me262. He flew around 15,000 test flight hours across many types of Messerschmitt, about 5,000 of which were on the Me109. He died in 1998.

Clipped Signature - Rudolf Opitz.

An experienced glider pilot before World War Two, he was drafted by the Luftwaffe as a test pilot in 1939, and in 1941 was working at he German Rocket Research Centre. He made the world's first flight in a rocket powered fighter in the Me163 Komet in 1942. Post war he moved to the United States and remained a test pilot. He died in 2010.

Clipped Signature - Leo J Sullivan.

Chief Test Pilot at Lockheed, he was a pilot for the C-130 Hercules in the late 1950s. Also, on 30th June 1968 he was pilot for the maiden flight of the enormous prototype Lockheed C-5A Galaxy flying from Dobbins Air Force Base in Georgia.

Clipped Signature - Sir Peter Squire.

Flew the Hawker Hunter with No.20 Sqn in Singapore before becoming an instructor on the Hunter and a Gnat pilot with the Red Arrows. He returned to operational flying on the Harrier, commanding No.1 Sqn during the Falklands War. He died in 2018.


Clipped Signature - Roger Conant.

A Marine pilot, he flew the F4U Corsair with VMF-215 on over 100 missions in the Pacific, scoring 6 victories to become an Ace. He later served in the Korean War, then became a test pilot for Douglas Aircraft. He died in 2007.


Clipped Signature - Jimmy Dell.

Served in the RAF as an instructor during World War Two, and later flew the F-86 Sabre with the USAF. Chief Test Pilot for English Electric / BAC, he test flew the Lightning, TSR2 and Jaguar, retiring in 1989. He died in 2008.


Clipped Signature - Sir Michael Giddings.

Flew Spitfires with No.122 Sqn in Scotland and with No.246 Sqn in Malta arriving on HMS Eagle. He later flew with No.118 Sqn and commanded No.129 Sqn and scored at least 4 victories in the war. He was a test pilot for 3 years then commanded No.57 Sqn with the Victor, retiring in 1976. He died in 2009.

Clipped Signature - Robert Gilliland.

Flew the F-84 Thunderjet during the Korean War then worked as a test pilot for Lockheed, initially on the F-104 Starfighter. He was hand-picked to pilot the SR-71 Blackbird on its maiden flight in 1962. He has been inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. He died in 2019.
