The 9th Lancers at Chilleanwalla by Stanley Wood. (B)

During the Second Sikh War members of the 9th Lancers regiment joined Sir Hugh Goughs army at Ferozepore, fighting at the Battle of Ramnuggur before marching on Chillianwallah. The battle was costly for the British, the Sikh forces eventually driven off, making their escape along with their artillery. This lead to heavy criticism being levied at Sir Hugh Gough for allowing this to occur at a cost of the lives of British troops.

Storming the Heights at Badajos by Stanley Wood. (B)

One of the bloodiest battles of the Napoleonic Wars was the Siege of Badajos (16 of March - 6th of April 1812). Wellingtons army faced off against a garrison of 5000 French soldiers in Badajos, Spain. The French forces were outnumbered 5 to 1 by the British, who had a force of 27,000 troops and 52 guns. However heavy fortifications and fierce fighting made the victory at Badajos, a very costly one with the British taking over 4700 casualties.

Waterloo, The Chage of the Scots Greys by Stanley Wood. (B)

Under the command of the Earl of Uxbridge, the Scots Greys formed part of the third line of Wellingtons troops on the left flank. Pictured is The Scots Greys famous charge at the Battle of Waterloo. Due to uneven ground they were only able to canter towards the enemy however despite their reduced speed they still managed to wade through the French 45th Regiment. The Greys ultimately suffered heavy losses taking over 200 casualties and losing more than half of their horses.

The 78th Highlanders at Lucknow by Stanley Wood. (B)

Soldiers from the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot provide relief during the Siege of Lucknow. Indian soldiers from the East India Company broke into open rebellion on the 30th of May 1857. They would siege the entrenched British garrison in Lucknow, leading to bloody fighting that lasted months. The first siege of Lucknow lasted 87 days and the second siege lasted a further 61 days. Ultimately the British forces would evacuate on the 19th of November.
