Battle of the Nations Near Leipzig 16th - 19th October, 1813 By Richard Knotel The Battle of Leipzig (also known as The Battle of Nations) was one of the largest battles in the Napoleonic Wars and a decisive victory for the Coalition forces. The battle involved intense fighting and resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Ultimately, the Coalition forces surrounded and defeated Napoleons army, leading to his retreat from Germany and marking a critical turning point in the campaign against his rule in Europe. The battle solidified the Coalitions resolve and paved the way for further military successes against France. |

During the armistice, the signing of the Treaties of Reichenbach was held the on 27th of June, 1813 at Reichenbach town hall. These treaties stood to establish a closer coalition between Great Britain Prussia, Russia and Austria and a strong military alliance against Napoleon. |

French Cavalry Breakthrough at the Battle of Kulm by Richard Knotel The Battle of Kulm was a considerably bloody battle for both the French forces and the Coalition forces. While ending in a overall French defeat, with General Vandamme being captured and the remaining French troops withdrawing - the casualties inflicted on the Coalition forces were not insignificant. Facing attacks from all sides by Russians, Austrians and Prussians the French would lose between 13,000 and 25,000 men - the coalition forces would lose around 12,000 as a result of the valiant defence put up by Vandammes troops. Cavalry battle at Liebertwolkwitz on October 14th, 1813 By Richard Knotel (PC) Pictured here is the death of Lieutenant Guido von der Lippe while pursuing King Joachim Murat during the action at Liebertwolkwitz. This cavalry skirmish took place around the Battle of Leipzig, Murat was nearly captured twice during this skirmish but managed to evade the enemy and had his cavalry repulse anyone in pursuit. The battle would go down as the largest cavalry battle in European history and ultimately ended in a stalemate. |

The Battle of La Rothiere on February 1st 1814 by Richard Knotel The Wurttemberg Dragoon Regiment Kronprinz breaking through the French line with a violent attack during the Battle of La Rothiere. A major reason for the French defeat at La Rothiere was the harsh snow drifts that swept across the Battlefield, which made columns of troops lose direction and cohesion, leaving them vulnerable to cavalry attack. |

Napoleons Escape From Leipzig on October 19th, 1813 by Richard Knotel Napoleons defeat at the Battle of Leipzig was a crucial turning point in the Napoleonic Wars. Facing a coalition of Russian, Prussian, Austrian, and Swedish forces, Napoleons army was outnumbered and despite some early successes, eventually overwhelmed. This culminated in heavy casualties and a retreat back towards the Rhine and onto the Battle of Hanau. |
