Hannes Trautloft by Graeme Lothian. (P) Hannes Truatloft is shown here leading Fw190s of JG54 over the Russian Front. Hannes Trautloft is one of the Luftwaffes great fighter leaders, scoring his first air victory in the Spanish Civil War in August 1936. Returning to Germany in 1937 he joined the national aerobatics team flying the Me109. Soon after the outbreak of World War II, Hannes took command of I./JG20 taking part in the Battle of Britain, before moving to the Balkans as Kommodore of JG54. Now leading the group on the Russian Front, JG54 took part in the heavy fighting, first in the Me109, then the Fw190. In the summer of 1943 Hannes Trautloft joined General Gallands staff. As a mutineer he was sacked by Goering, thus ending an illustrious combat career comprising 550 combat missions and 57 aerial victories. |

(P) Fully dressed and resplendent, HMS Hood is pictured preparing for King George Vs review of the Fleet in July 1935 as other capital ships take up their positions around her. Ramillies can be seen off Hoods port bow, Resolution astern, whilst just beyond her boat deck, the mighty Nelson gently nudges into position. |

The Rearguard by David Pentland. (P) Preussisch Stargard, East Prussia, February 1945. Following the departure of the platoon's two other vehicles, after expending all their ammunition, the single Jagdpanther of Oberfeldwebel Hermann Bix remained to cover the withdrawal of all supporting infantry in the area. Hidden behind a muck heap, with only twenty armour piercing and five high explosive shells remaining he made the attacking Soviet Shermans pay a heavy price, destroying sixteen of their number before he too fell back out of ammunition. |

The Long Road to Kharkov by David Pentland. (P) Kharkov, Russia, February - March 1943. After abandoning Rostov and Kharkov in the face of the Soviet Winter Offensive, Field Marshal Erich von Manstein set about the recapture of both. Among those taking part in the ensuing counterattack was the newly promoted tank gunner Ernst Barkmann, of 2nd Company 2nd SS Panzer Grenadier Division, who had just been given command of his own Panzer III. |
Tribute to Generalleutnant Adolf Galland by Ivan Berryman. (P) One of the all time great fighter aces, Adolf Galland is depicted flying Bf 109E-4/N of Stab/JG26 in September 1940. Galland flew 705 combat missions during World War Two and was credited with a final tally of 104 aerial victories. He survived the war and died peacefully in February 1996. |

Tribute to Hans-Georg von der Marwitz by Ivan Berryman. (P) Credited with a total of 15 aerial victories, Hans-Georg von der Marwitz is shown here in his distinctive burgundy Pfalz D.III he flew as commander of Jagdstaffel 30 around the spring of 1918. The son of a Cavalry General and commander of Germany's Second Army, he began a military career in the cavalry, before moving to infantry regiments and then training as a bomber then fighter pilot. He survived the war but was killed in an air accident in 1925. |
HMAS Perth at Suez by Ivan Berryman. (P) The class leader of three destroyers built to the U.S. Charles F Adams class design for the Royal Australian Navy, HMAS Perth served with distinction for 34 years before being scuttled in 2001 to form an artificial reef in King George Sound. She is depicted here passing through the Suez canal on one of her many deployments. |
Defence of Hougoumont Farm at the Battle of Waterloo by Jason Askew. (P) The British 1st Foot Guards and Coldstream Guards rush to defend the gate of Hougoumont Farm against a fierce French attack during the battle of Waterloo. During the battle, the Coldstream Guards lost 97 killed, 446 wounded and 4 missing, while the 1st Foot Guards lost 125 killed and 352 wounded. |

A 6pdr anti tank gun team of the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division, The Polar Bears, in action against the attacking tanks and infantry of 9th SS and 2nd SS Panzer Divisions. The 49th Division comprised of 1st Tyneside Scottish, 10th & 11th Durham Light Infantry, 4th Lincolnshire, 1/4th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, the Hallamshire Battalion, 6th & 7th Duke of Wellingtons, and 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers. |
Enemy in Sight by David Pentland. (P) Cheux, Normandy, 25th June 1944. Royal Armoured Corps Recce troops of the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division set up a temporary observation post to locate 12th SS Panzer Division positions, prior to Operation Epsom. The 15th Division comprised of 9th Cameronians, 2nd Glasgow Highlanders, 7th Seaforth Highlanders, 8th Royal Scots, 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers, 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers, 10th Highland Light Infantry, 2nd Gordon Highlanders and the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. |

U-861 - Tribute to Jürgen Oesten by Ivan Berryman. (P) Launched in 1943, U-861 was a Type IXD2 submarine commanded by Jürgen Oesten. Having previously commanded U-61 and U-106 successfully, he took U-861 to the Far East on a journey that took several months, sinking ships off Brazil and Madagascar on the way. Returning in early 1945, the submarine struck an iceberg off Greenland but managed to reach Trondheim in Norway without any casualties. Here, the U-boat was surrendered. Scuttled off the north of Ireland by the Allies, the wreck is now a dive site. Jürgen Oesten was awarded the Knight's Cross and sunk a shipping tonnage in excess of 100,000. He died in 2010. |
