Ascension Departure by Ivan Berryman. (P) During the Falklands conflict in 1982, the tiny mid-Atlantic volcanic island of Ascension became the starting point for the Black Buck missions - a relay of tanker aircraft refueling two Vulcan bombers to attack Argentine positions and damage the runway at Port Stanley to prevent the use of fast jets. At the time these were the longest range bombing missions in history. |

Originally stationed in the Shetlands the squadron had been sent south to support the hard pressed units of fighter command during the Battle of Britain. |
Piper, 72nd Regiment c.1856 by Chris Collingwood (P) The 72nd regiment (The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) fought with the Highland Brigade at Sevastopol during the Crimean war (1854-56) and in the Central India campaign during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59). In 1863, it took part in the Umbeyla Expedition on the North West Frontier. The regiment fought in the Second Afghan War (1878-80) at Peiwar Kotal (1878), Charasiah (1879), Kabul (1879) and Kandahar (1880). In 1881 the regiment was amalgamated with the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment (Ross-shire Buffs) to form The Seaforth Highlanders. The image is of Pipe-Major Macdonald, in 1858 |

Supermarine S6.B Engine Change by Ivan Berryman. (P) The Supermarine S6.B was the aircraft famed for winning the Schneider Trophy outright in 1931. Here, the Rolls Royce R engine is being lowered into the body of the aircraft. The engine cover on the aircraft was so large that when it was removed, there was very little left except a void where the engine would be. |
De Gaulle's Defenders by David Pentland. (P) May 1940. Designed by Renault to replace the ageing FT-17 in the light infantry tank support role, as such it was relatively heavily armoured and was armed with a low velocity 37mm gun. Like all French tanks of this time it used a single man turret, which put the commander/gunner under considerable pressure in combat. The R.35 entered service with the French army in 1935, and in 1940 it was upgraded to the R-40. In all 900 Renault tanks were in service when the Germans invaded. |
Desperate Measures by Ivan Berryman. (P) Having already registered two victories since his arrival at 501 Sqn in the Autumn of 1940, Plt Off K W Mackenzie found himself again in action against some Messerschmitt Bf.109s on 7th October, sharing in the destruction of one before vigorously pursuing another as it turned to head out across the Channel. With his ammunition exhausted, Mackenzie was determined not to let the interloper escape and placed his Hurricane's starboard wing over the tail of the Bf.109, bringing it violently down and severing the tail of the German fighter which plunged uncontrollably into the sea. With his own wingtip missing from the impact and his engine now damaged by rounds from other pursuing German aircraft, Mackenzie limped his crippled Hurricane over the cliffs near Folkestone, where he crash-landed. He survived the incident, albeit with some facial injuries sustained when he was thrown against the gunsight, and was awarded the DFC for his gallantry. |

Ostsack by David Pentland. (P) Narva Bridgehead, Northern Russia, 17th March 1944. Tiger I tanks of Albert Kersher and Otto Carius, of 2nd Company . Heavy tank Battalion 502, supporting the Feldherrnhalle and SS Nordland divisions, repelled a serious attempt by the Soviets to break out from their bridgehead. For their part the Tigers accounted for 13 T34s, 1 KV1 and 5 anti tank guns. |
