Breaking the Gran Bridgehead by David Pentland. (P) Hungary, 18th February 1945. The Soviet bridgehead across the lower river Gran threatened the important oilfields at Komorn. To deal with it, Heavy tank battalion 503 was attached to the elite Hoch und Deutschmeister Division. Then in conjunction with the 12th SS Hitlerjugend Division to the north the operation was launched and the bridgehead successfully crushed. |
De Gaulle's Defenders by David Pentland. (P) May 1940. Designed by Renault to replace the ageing FT-17 in the light infantry tank support role, as such it was relatively heavily armoured and was armed with a low velocity 37mm gun. Like all French tanks of this time it used a single man turret, which put the commander/gunner under considerable pressure in combat. The R.35 entered service with the French army in 1935, and in 1940 it was upgraded to the R-40. In all 900 Renault tanks were in service when the Germans invaded. |
Turning the Tables, Kurland, Baltic Coast, 25th January - 3rd February 1945 by David Pentland. (P) During the Fourth Battle of Kurland, Major Josef William Sepp Brandner, commander of Sturmgeschutz Brigade 912, personally counterattacked a soviet breakthrough, then with only his headquarters of 3 guns continued without infantry support to pursue and rout the enemy units. By the end of this action he had destroyed his 57th tank, his final tally rose to 66 by the wars end. |

Original Pencil Sketch for Assault on Courcellette, The Somme, 15th September 1916 by David Pentland. (P) The village of Courcellette dominated the Somme battlefield, and it was the Canadian Corps who were given the task of taking the strongpoint. They were however aided by a new weapon, six tanks of No.1 Section, C Company, Heavy Tank Battalion. The Mark Is were commanded by Captain A. M. Inglis in C5 Creme de Menthe and supported the 31st (Alberta) Battalion in the successful assault in and around the villages Sugar Factory. |

(P) Leutnant Heinrich Kohlers Stug IIIs of 1st section, 3rd Battery, 322 Stumgeschutz Abteilung, push back repeated Soviet attempts to break out of their bridgehead at Baranow. Within only 2 days they destroyed for 23 enemy tanks. |

Alfred Rubbel at Kursk by David Pentland. (P) Central Russia, 4th-12th July 1943. For Operation Citadel the Heavy tank battalion 503 was split into separate companies and attached to various panzer divisions. Rubbels 1st company went to 6th Panzer Division, and as such take part in the epic breakthrough on the 10th and 11th which came close to the collapse of the soviet southern front! |

Piper, 72nd Regiment c.1856 by Chris Collingwood (P) The 72nd regiment (The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) fought with the Highland Brigade at Sevastopol during the Crimean war (1854-56) and in the Central India campaign during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59). In 1863, it took part in the Umbeyla Expedition on the North West Frontier. The regiment fought in the Second Afghan War (1878-80) at Peiwar Kotal (1878), Charasiah (1879), Kabul (1879) and Kandahar (1880). In 1881 the regiment was amalgamated with the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment (Ross-shire Buffs) to form The Seaforth Highlanders. The image is of Pipe-Major Macdonald, in 1858 |
Original Pencil Sketch for Battle of Cambrai, France, 20th November 1917 by David Pentland. (P) At 0620 hours covered by a brief barrage from 1000 guns, the tanks of C and F Battalions in MkIV tanks advanced alongside the men of the British 12th Division against the impregnable German Hindenburg line at Cambrai. Supported in the air by 4 RFC squadron flying ground attack missions, the general offensive had broken through 3 trench lines and penetrated 5 miles on a 6 mile front by lunchtime. Although these gains were not exploited and later retaken by a German counter offensive, Cambrai showed the full potential of the tank on the battlefield. |
Battle of Isandhlwana 22nd January 1879 (Major Figures of the Battle) by Stuart Liptrot (P) The centre drawing shows the last groups of soldiers of the 24th South Wales Borderers at Isandhlwana during the last of the battle as the force consisting of 2 guns and 70 men of N Battery, 5th Brigade, Royal Artillery, 5 companies of 1st Battalion, the 24th Foot, 1 company of 2nd Battalion, the 24th Foot, Mounted volunteers and Natal Police and two companies of the Natal Native Infantry is overrun by superior numbers of Zulu warriors. Surrounding the centre drawing are portraits of some of the main figures. These are from top left : Lieutenant Colonel H B Pulleine 24th Regt, Lieutenant N J A Coghill 1/24th Regt, Quartermaster E Bloomfield 2/24th Regt, Captain R Younghusband 1/24th Regt, Private S Wassall VC 80th Regt, Brevet Major S Smith Royal Artillery, Brevet Colonel A W Durnford Royal Engineers, Lieutenant T Melville VC 1/24th Regt, Lieutenant H Smith-Dorrien 95th Regt and Lieutenant C D Pope 2/24th Regt. The losses during the battle were 52 British officers and 806 non-commissioned ranks and 471 Africans died fighting for the British. Zulu warrior dead were around 2,000 dead either on the field or from wounds. There were only around 60 Europeans who survived the battle. |
Lying in Wait by David Pentland. (P) Gerhard Fischer. Poland, 14th August 1944 - Jagdpanzer IV of Jagd Pz Batt 5, 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking. Jagdpanzer IVs of 5th SS Panzer Panzerjager battalion Wiking employed east of Warsaw to halt the Soviet attempts to break into the besieged city. |
David and Goliath by David Pentland. (P) Vernon, France, 27th August 1944. Leading 30th Corps assault across the Seine at Vernon, 43rd Wessex Division gained an initial foothold on the east bank. Heroic efforts however by the Royal Engineers of 71st, 72nd and 73rd Field Companies, succeeded in constructing a Class 9 Bailey bridge (David, shown left) and a Second Class 40 bridge (Goliath, shown right) Despite constant enemy fire this amazing feat was achieved in only 2 days, and allowed 15/19th Hussars Cromwells and 4.7th Dragoons Guards Shermans to cross just in time to repulse a serious German counter attack by Tiger IIs of SS Panzer Abteilung 101. |
Pather Tank at the Danube Bridgehead by Jason Askew. (P) Floridsdorf, Vienna, 3th April 1945. By mid April the Soviet assault had almost cleared German resistance from the south bank of the Danube. Only one small bridgehead remained open to allow troops a chance to escape, and this exit was defended by only 2 tanks and a few anti-tank guns. Defending the eastern approaches to the bridge was the Panther tank of SS Obersturmfurher Arnold Friesen, 2nd SS Panzer Division. Despite being only 19 he was a veteran of Kursk, Normandy, the Ardennes and Hungary with a tally of 97 tank kills to his credit. By the end of the day Friesen and his crew accounted for a further 14 soviet tanks, (the last two with panzerfausts), before covering the final withdrawal of the last German units across the bridge under cover of darkness. |
