(Detail from) Battery on fire, Raszyn by by Wojciech Kossak. (PC) The Battle of Raszyn, fought on April 19, 1809, during the War of the Fifth Coalition, was a significant engagement between Polish and Austrian forces near the village of Raszyn, in present-day Poland. Despite being outnumbered, the Polish troops put up a strong resistance and managed to hold their ground effectively. The battle was notable for its intense fighting and demonstrated the Polish armys resilience. Although the Austrians eventually forced the Poles to retreat, the engagement delayed the Austrian advance and allowed the Polish forces to regroup and continue their resistance against the Austrian invasion. |

Sgt Ewart Capturing the Eagle of the 45th Regiment During the Battle of Waterloo by Sullivan (PC) Sgt Ewart is shown taking the French standard from the 45th French Infantry Regiment. Ewart cut down two French soldiers and the standard Bearer to keep hold of the Eagle and standard, he was ordered to take it to the rear. By being ordered to the rear, this probably saved his life and also the standard for the regiment, as the rest of the regiment continued charging forward to French artillery positions, much further than they should have gone, now with very tired horses and unable to rally, the Scots Greys were attacked by Farines Brigade of Cavalry (6th and 9th Cuirassiers.) and later by the 4th Lancers, very few managed to return to the British Lines. |

General Ludwig von Yorck Near Wartenburg on October 3rd, 1813 By Richard Knotel (PC) Pictured here, Field Marshal General Ludwig von Yorck honours the brave 2nd Battalion of the Life regiment by uncovering his head. Von Yorck would go on to be known as von Wartenburg as a battle honour after his corps won the action at Warternburg; playing a major role in the Prussian victories in Germany against Napoleons forces. |
Outpost of the New Model Army on the Eve of the Battle of Naseby by Ernest Crofts. (PC) The New Model Army was formed in 1645 by the Parliamentarians during English Civil War, and was disbanded in 1660 after the Restoration. It differed from the other armies in the Civil war in that it was intended as an army where its soldeirs were liable for service anywhere in the country, instead of restricted to a local area or garrison. This meant that the soldiers of the new Model Army would be full time professional soldiers instead of part time militia. It was also intended that its officers were to be professional soldiers, not having seats in either the Houses of Lords or Commons. Here a Cavalry sentry is shown before the battle of Naseby, which would become a key battle of the English Civil War. On 14th June 1645, the main army of King Charles I was completely destroyed by the Parliamentarian New Model Army under the command of Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell. |
Last Man Out by Mark Churms (PC) Private Robert Jones. Decorated for conspicuous bravery and devotion to the wounded at Rorkes drift. Private Robert and William Jones, posted in a room of the Hospital facing the hill, kept up a steady fire against enormous odds, and while one worked to cut a hole through the partition into the next room, the other shot Zulu after Zulu through the loophooled walls, using his own and his comrades rifle alternatively when the barrels became to hot to hold owing to the incessant firing. By their united heroic efforts six out of the seven patients were saved by being carried through the broken partition. the seventh, sergeant Maxwell being delirious, refused to be helped, and on Robert Jones returning to take him by force he found him being stabbed by the Zulus in his bed, Robert Jones died in 1898 in Peterchurch Herefordshire . Both men were awarded the Victoria Cross. |
Machine Guns in Action by Allan Stewart (PC) The use of machine guns in World War I significantly transformed military tactics, primarily favouring defensive strategies. Their ability to deliver sustained fire made it challenging for infantry to launch successful assaults leading to an emphasis on trench warfare. Commanders concentrated machine guns in specific areas to maximize their effectiveness, integrating them with artillery and infantry for combined arms operations. As the war progressed lighter machine guns allowed for more mobility, influencing tactics and creating a psychological impact on both attackers and defenders. |
No Place to Hide by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Spartan helmets were forged from bronze, enclosing the head in a seamless curve of metal that left only narrow slits for eyes and a thin gap for breath. The crest often made of horsehair-ran from brow to nape, a tall plume that added height and presence on the battlefield. |

Alfred Rubbel at Kursk by David Pentland. (PC) Central Russia, 4th-12th July 1943. For Operation Citadel the Heavy tank battalion 503 was split into separate companies and attached to various panzer divisions. Rubbels 1st company went to 6th Panzer Division, and as such take part in the epic breakthrough on the 10th and 11th which came close to the collapse of the soviet southern front! |

The Passage of the Bidassoa by Wellingtons Army - 7 October, 1813 by James Prinsep Beadle (PC) On the morning of the 7th of October 1813, Wellingtons army crossed the Bidassoa estuary to attack French positions on the eastern bank. The crossing was perilous as water at points came up to shoulder level, after the French realised they were under attack, they opened fire across the river, adding further peril. The Allies successfully executed a series of coordinated attacks that allowed them to cross the river and establish a foothold in French-held territory. |
