Tribute to Sqn Ldr David Fairbanks by Ivan Berryman. Whilst flying with other Hawker Tempests of 274 Sqn on 11th February 1945, Sqn Ldr David Fairbanks spotted a lone Arado Ar234 of the Kommando Sperling 1 (F) / 123 flown by Hauptmann Hans Felde returning to its base at Rheine. A desperate chase commenced through the cloudbase until the German jet prepared to land, whereupon Fairbanks sent 4U+DH down in flames after a single short burst of his four 20mm cannon. |
Luftwaffe Arado 234 B-2 by Barry Price. One of the most advanced aircraft of World War II, the AR234 with its twin turbojets could carry out its high altitude reconnaissance or bombing duties at speed which made interception by Allied aircraft virtually impossible. |

  Oberstleutnant Hans-Georg Batcher Our estimated value of this signature : £50 Died : 2003 | Oberstleutnant Hans-Georg Batcher Born 13th January 1914, he was flying with KG4 by 1st April 1936 as an observer. He went to pilot training in September 1936, flew with KG27 and by 15th July 1941 was flying with KG100, who he flew with, and commanded until 12th June 1944, including after it was renamed KG4 on 11th January 1943. He then joined KG76 flying the Arado Ar234 bomber, before going on to command KG54 flying the new Me262 jet ffrom 27th February 1945. In his career he was awarded the Iron Cross I and II, the German Cross in Gold and the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves. He died on 23rd April 2003. |
