Tribute to Walter Krupinski by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Originally flying Me109s with JG52 at the end of the Battle of Britain, Walter Krupinski then transferred to the Eastern Front and had scored more than 50 victories by the end of 1942, earning him the Knight's Cross. He took on a young and struggling Erich Hartmann and tutored him in aerial combat - Hartmann went on to become the leading Ace in history with 352 victories. Commanding 7.JG52 in 1943, Krupinski scored 11 victories in a single day. In the spring of 1944 he went west for the defence of Germany, commanding units in JG5, JG26 and JG11. He was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross and in March 1945 joined the famous JV44 flying Me262 jets until the end of the war. In more than 1100 missions he was credited with 197 victories. He is seen here flying Bf.109 G-2 Yellow 5 of 6/JG52 over Russia in October 1942. He later flew with the reformed German Air Force after the war, and flew the F-104 Starfighter. He died in 2000.

Tribute to Wing Commander Adrian Warburton by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

One of the most unorthodox and daring pilots of World War II, 'Warby' Warburton was the only bomber pilot to become an ace, shooting down a Savoia Marchetti SM.79, a Macchi MC.200 and three Cant Z.506Bs, one of which is depicted here being attacked by Warburton's Martin Maryland AR705.

Mädchen für Alles by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Translated as Maid of all Work. Junkers Ju.88A-1 4D+DC of Stab II./KG 30 Eagle Wing is depicted attacking a requisitioned Royal Navy trawler in the English Channel in the summer of 1940.

Snowbound - Tribute to No.439 Sqn RCAF by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On finals, Hawker Typhoon PD608 (5V-G) of 439 Sqn drifts over the threshold at a forward airstrip in Belgium after a mission during the winter of 1945. RB326 is waiting to take off, whilst others taxi in to their dispersal.

Hikin' for Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

B-17G 2107027 is depicted limping home to Bassingbourn with the starboard outer propeller feathered following a raid during the Summer of 1944. 'Hikin' for Home' served with the 322nd Bomb Sqn, 91st Bomb Group as part of the 8th Air Force. Escorting her home is Major George Preddy, the highest scoring P-51 pilot and sixth in the list of all-time top American Aces, seen here flying 413321 'Cripes a Mighty 3rd'.

A Hasty Exit by Ivan Berryman (PC)

D-Day Invasion : Tribute to the Glider Troops by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A tribute to the glider crews and airborne troops who participated in the glider operations during D-Day. The British Horsa glider (known as the flying coffin) was used by British, Canadian and American airborne forces during the invasion. Approximately 100 glider pilots were killed or wounded during the D-Day operations.

Tribute to Clyde East by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Clyde East joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and by 1942 was flying P-51 Mustangs with No.414 Sqn RCAF in England. He then transferred to the US Air Force, joining the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. He is shown here in P.51D Mustang 44-14306 5M-K, 'Lil Margaret', April 1945. In more than 200 missions he scored 13 victories, later serving in Korea flying RF-80 Shooting Stars and retiring in 1965. He died in 2014.

Raid on Taranto by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

The balance of maritime power in the Mediterranean was transformed at a stroke by the British air attack which disabled three Italian battleships in a few minutes. The target was the core of Mussolinis fleet, tucked away in Taranto Harbour, in southern Italy. The attack, codenamed Operation Judgement, took place in bright moonlight by twenty-one Swordfish from the British carrier HMS Illustrious. In the confined space of the harbour, their torpedoes had a devastating impact, at least nine torpedoes struck their targets. In all, seven ships were severely damaged, including the battleship Caio Duilio (left), Littorio (right) and Conte Di Cavour.

No.501 Sqn Hurricane Mk.I of Squadron Leader Harry -Hulk- Hogan, during the Battle of Britain. This aircraft carried the codes SD-A.

Tribute to Hans-Ulrich Rudel by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The most highly-decorated Luftwaffe pilot, Hans-Ulrich Rudel is the sole recipient of the Golden Oak Leaves supplementary award to the Knight's Cross, to add to the Swords and Diamonds. These awards reflect his quite incredible achievements with the Ju87 Stuka dive-bomber - he flew more than 2,000 missions, claiming more than 500 tanks amongst around 1,500 ground targets destroyed, plus a battleship, cruiser, destroyer and other shipping, as well as a number of trains. Additionally, he flew more than 400 missions in the Fw190 fighter, and is credited with 11 air victories. He lost a leg in combat near the end of the war and was later captured by the Allies, remaining in a POW camp until 1946. He is depicted here in his Ju87 lining up for an attack amongst the snowy landscape of the Eastern Front. Hans-Ulrich Rudel died in 1982.

Tragedy Over the Alps by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On the night of 13th August 1943, Short Stirling EF452 of 218 Sqn was part of a bombing raid to Turino in Italy. As the Squadron cleared the Alps the tail gunner of one of the aircraft mistook EF452 for an enemy fighter and immediately opened fire with great accuracy. The windshield fragmented and was partially blasted away, 3 engines were hit and one had to be shut down. The Navigator was hit and killed, the pilot was severely wounded taking hits in the face, right arm and chest, the bomb aimer and flight engineer were also wounded. The Flight Engineer pulled the slumped pilot off the controls and managed to pull the aircraft out of its dive at approximately 4000 feet. The Bomb Aimer took over the controls and turned south over the Mediterranean for another allied airfield knowing the aircraft wouldn’t be able to climb back over the Alps. Although grievously wounded, the young Pilot assisted the Bomb Aimer as best he could, slipping in and out of consciousness and scribbling notes, as his jaw was broken. The Bomb Aimer managed to crash land with the landing gear up on the airfield at Bone, Algeria. The brave young pilot who refused to be treated, succumbed to his wounds later that afternoon. Pilot Flight Sergeant Arthur Louis Aaron DFM was awarded the Victoria Cross, whilst RCAF Bomb Aimer Flight Sergeant Alan William Jessup Larden was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) and Flight Engineer Sergeant Malcolm Mitchem was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal.

Italian Raiders by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Italian Air Force's involvement in the Battle of Britain is one of the less documented facets of the conflict of 1940, but raids by aircraft of the Corpo Aereo Italiano (CAI) on mainland Britain were a reality in the closing stages, usually with little effect and almost always with high losses on the Italian side, due largely to obsolete aircraft and lack of pilot training. Based at Ursel in Belgium, Fiat BR.20 bombers flew over 100 sorties, usually escorted by Fiat CR.42s, as illustrated here, the nearest aircraft being that of 18° Gruppo's Commanding Officer Maggiore Ferruccio Vosilla, wearing the white fuselage band and command pennant on the fuselage side.

Dinah Might by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

6th June, 1944 - D-Day - and Martin B.26 Marauders of the 386th Bomb Group, 553rd Bomb Squadron are among the first aircraft to bomb the beaches in readiness for the Normandy landings on that momentous day. Shown softening up the enemy gun emplacements on a low level run over Utah Beach is 131576 AN-Z, now on display at the Utah Beach Museum.

Sea Wings by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A pair of Fairey Swordfish Mk1s of 812 Sqn peel away above the pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Ark Royal, during a pre-war exercise in British waters. L9781 is nearest with L7672 in the background.

Deadly Combo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Equipped with the Henschel Hs.293 guided bomb, the Dornier Do.217s of KG 40 and KG 100 represented a new and significant threat to Allied shipping. The first such victims were the sloop HMS Egret and the destroyer HCMS Athabaskan, both in the Bay of Biscay in August 1943. Although crude and needing to be guided to their target by an operator in the launch aircraft, the Hs.293s introduced a new breed of air-launched weapon to modern warfare, a concept that is still in use to this day.

JBII - Hawker Typhoon of Wing Commander J R Baldwin by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Squadron Leader J R Baldwin passes above a section of Mulberry Harbour near Arromanches, late in June 1944, his personalised Hawker Typhoon bearing the codes JBII.

The Attack on Kleykamp Villa by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Just before 15.00 on 11th April 1944, six de Havilland Mosquito FB.VIs of 613 Sqn led by Wing Comander Robert Bateson successfully destroyed the Gestapo records office housed inside Kleykamp Villa in The Hague. Flying at rooftop height and using the tower of the famous Peace Palace as a sighting reference, the first wave of Mosquitoes dropped their high explosive bombs to 'open up' the building, whilst the second wave hit it again with incendiaries to burn all the records. Incredibly, no one outside the building was hurt and no other buildings were damaged, save for some broken windows caused by the blast. All six aircraft returned home safely.

Climbout from Plivot by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Bristol Blenheim IV N6215 of 139 Sqn is depicted departing the squadron's base at Plivot, France, on 12th May 1940. Sadly, it was a mission from which neither the aircraft, nor the crew would return, XD-Q being lost in a crash at Lanaken, Limburg in Belgium that same day with the loss of three crew.
