Text for the above items :

Tribute to Wing Commander Brendan 'Paddy' Finucane by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Wing Commander Brendan 'Paddy' Finucane is shown flying Spitfire Vb BM308 of No.154 Sqn based at Southend in 1942.

Charlie Safely Off by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Mosquito HP926 SB-C Charlie of No.464 Sqn RAAF gets airborne from Hunsdon on 28th February 1944. The crew, Flying Officer David Avery RNZAF and Warrant Officer Leslie Brodie RAAF are shown embarking on what would be an eventful 'Noball' mission over France. The aircraft was damaged by flak with sections of the tailplane and rudder shot away, but with remarkable skill, Flying Officer Avery wrestled the aircraft back across the Channel. The doomed Mosquito was aimed back towards the sea before the crew took to their parachutes near Chichester, and it crashed harmlessly.

The End by David Pentland. (PC)

An abandoned Me262 shown in 1945 at the end of Work War Two.

Operation Mallard by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Halifax Tugs Towing Hamilcar Gliders. Halifax glider tugs of 644 Squadron based at Tarrant Rushton head out across the English Channel with their Hamilcar gliders as part of Operation Overlord in June 1944. The mighty Hamilcar was capable of carrying an 8-ton payload, which was the equivalent of two Tetrarch light tanks, and was used both in the Normandy invasion and at Arnhem.

Typhoon! by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

So often overshadowed by its own achievements as a ground attack aircraft, Hawkers mighty Typhoon also proved itself a formidable adversary in air to air combat as demonstrated by the successes of F/Lt (later Wing Commander) J R Baldwin who claimed no fewer than three Bf.109G4s in the skies above Kent on 20th January 1943 in a single sortie. Baldwin finished the war as the highest-scoring Typhoon pilot of all with 15 confirmed victories, one shared, one probable and four damaged. He was tragically lost over Korea in 1952 whilst on an exchange posting with the USAF, but is depicted here at the peak of his powers, flying Typhoon 1B DN360 (PR-A) of 609 Sqn.

The Dash for the Beach by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Two Republic P.47s of the 78th FG roar low over the Normandy beaches as the Allied invasion gets underway during Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944 as an LCT(5) Tank Landing Craft makes its break for the beach through a hail of enemy fire. These craft were used at all the D-Day beaches, carrying mixed loads of vehicles and stores in almost impossible conditions.

Raid on Wajir by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The second half of 1940 saw repeated attacks by the Regia Aeronautica on Allied airstrips in East Africa, but its aging bomber force proved no match for the Hurricanes and Gladiators that offered a spirited defence. The airstrip at Wajir in Kenya was attacked several times by the Italians, but largely survived, the worst damage being the destruction of a fuel dump on 13th June. Here, a Gloster Gladiator of No.1 SAAF Squadron despatches a Caproni Ca.133, just south of Wajir.

Ship's Company by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Developed from the Supermarine Seagull, the Walrus was to prove itself a useful and capable workhorse in almost every theatre of the Second World War. Here, HMS Rodney despatches her Shagbat from the catapult atop C turret.

41 Squadron Spitfires by Ivan Berryman (PC)

Spitfires of No.41 Sqn during the Battle of Britain. The lead aircraft is EB-J, flown by Sqn Ldr Maurice Brown. Additional colour added to enhance this previously black and white image

Home Again by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A pair of No.105 Sqn Mosquitos return over the English Channel in the early dawn light.

Dambusters - Moment of Truth by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

This was the moment when the massive Möhne dam was finally breached on the night of 16th-17th May 1943 during the top secret Operation Chastise. The specially-converted Lancaster B MkIII of Fl/Lt David Maltby ED906(G) AJ-J roars between the towers of the dam, having released the Upkeep bouncing bomb that would ultimately cause a cascade of water to flood into the valley below. Fl/Lt Harold Martin's identical aircraft, ED909(G) AJ-P can be seen off Maltby's port wing with all of its light ablaze, drawing enemy fire from the attacking bomber.

North Atlantic Companions by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Short Sunderland Mk.1 L5798 (DA-A) of 210 Sqn, based at Pembroke, dips her wings in salute to HMS Hood as she punches through the North Atlantic swell early in 1941. By May of that year, this mighty ship would be gone, lost with all but three of her crew, a victim of the might of the German Navy at the savage hands of the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen.

The Dash for Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Drop tanks gone and light on fuel, two Hawker Tempest Vs of 3 Sqn based at RAF Coltishall and its satellite base of RAF Matlask, race at low level across the mist-filled fields of southern England on their way home. Nearest aircraft is JN817 (JF-H) with JN765 (JF-K) slightly ahead.

Last One Away by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A Lancaster of No.15 Squadron takes to the air at the start of a night sortie from Mildenhall in June 1944.

Breakout. Amiens Raid by Mosquitos by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

When De Havilland built the prototype DH.98 Mosquito (E-0234) they did so as an act of the purest faith in their design since the Air Ministry had already dismissed the companys proposal for their all-wood aircraft as impractical and unworkable. However, when E-0234 first flew on 25th November 1940, it demonstrated remarkably smooth handling characteristics and its speed, as expected, was outstanding. Here at last was a bomber which, in a straight line, could outfly even the Spitfire, giving rise to such nicknames as Wooden Wonder and, succicntly The Aeroplane. With such an aircraft, it was soon realised, many new possibilities were laid open to the RAF, among them the chance to initiate precision raids whereupon carefully selected isolated targets could be attacked with pinpoint accuracy. Just such a raid took place on 18th February 1944, involving 18 Mosquitoes of Nos 64 and 487 Squadrons in an operation on the jail at Amiens, France, where a large number of the French Resistance were being held for questioning by the Gestapo. It was thought unlikely that any of them would survive their ordeal at the hands of their inquisitors and it was considered more sensible to try to aid their escape by breaching the prison walls, even if it meant that some of the prisoners might be killed in the process. An accurate model of the jail and the nearby town was constructed and each pilot viewed the model from eye level to familiarise themselves with the view that they would get from a planned height of 50 feet. With this knowledge and some carefully selected reference points such as church spires and chimneys, the Mosquitoes, led by Group Captain Charles Pickard, were able to brush over the rooftops of the town and deliver their bombs with incredible accuracy, breaching the prison walls in four places. 258 prisoners escaped in the ensuing chaos and were quickly spirited away by other Resistance groups who were waiting outside. Sadly, a number of French prisoners were killed in the raid and added to the losses of that day was Group Captain Pickard himself who fell victim to marauding Focke Wulf 190s, but the raid had been a tremendous success and further precision attacks using the most superb Mosquito were carried out throughout 1944 and 1945, each one making its own significant contribution to the downward turn in the fortunes of Hitlers Reich.

Tribute to Ivan Kozhedub by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Considered the highest scoring Soviet and Allied Ace of World War Two, Ivan Kozhedub is credited with more than 60 victories in less than two years from July 1943 to April 1945. Seen here late in the war flying his Lavochkin La-7, he is also notably the first Soviet pilot to claim an Me262 jet. Awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union three times, he stayed with military aviation and served in the Korean War. He died in 1991, aged 71.

Lull Before the Storm by Keith Aspinall. (PC)

The Tempest of Wing Commander Roland Beamont DSO and Bar DFC and Bar, June 1944.

Tribute to the Flying Cheetahs by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Lt Hinton Horscroft is depicted getting airborne from Seoul, Korea, in P.51D 369 of the South African Air Force. Lt Horscroft survived the war in Korea and completed 75 missions with No.2 Sqn South African Air Force, known as the 'Flying Cheetahs', before returning safely to his home and family in Durban.

Tribute to Joe Peterburs by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

This is the moment when Joe Peterburs began his chase after German ace Walter Schuck's Messerschmitt Me262 on 10th April 1945, a combat that ended in victory for the American. But this was to be a day of mixed fortunes for Peterburs who was himself brought down some time later by ground fire whilst strafing an airfield. He was captured, but escaped and fought with a Russian tank unit to the battle of Wittenberg on the Elbe.

Evening Sortie by David Pentland (PC)

Mitsibushi Ki51 Sonya light bombers, Hollandia, New Guinea 1943. A Shotai, (flight) of Ki-51 of 70 Dokuritsu Chutai (Independent Company), flying over the Nen river near their home base on Hollandia.

The Long Patrol by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

When the RAF took delivery of their first Consolidated B.24 Liberators in 1941, aerial cover for trans-Atlantic convoys was strengthened, affording these brave merchant ships a modicum of protection as they forged their slow passage from the US to Britain with vital supplies. 120 Sqn was immediately pressed into this role from their initial base at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland, before moving to Ballykelly and Reykjavik in Iceland as the U-Boat threat increased. The example shown is a Liberator V of RAF Coastal Command.
