Susan Crawford is one of Britains finest contemporary equestrian artists. Born in the Scottish district of East Lothian in 1941, she grew up on the family farm on which her parents trained racehorses. She learned to ride in her infancy and soon began to express her passion for horses on canvas. Apart from her two year training at the Florentine drawing school of Signorini Nera Suni, Susan Crawlord is entirely self-taught. She has exhibited at a number of distinguished galleries throughout the world, including The National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Academy of Arts. The Tryon Gallery, London, and The National Gallery of Pahang Pinang, Malaysia. Amongst her many fine works, Susan Crawford has painted twenty-one Epsom Derby winners and great steeple-chasers including Red Rum, Arkle and Desert Orchid. However, despite her high profile as an equestrian artist, she is also well-established as a painter of portraits. Sue has painted five members of the British Royal family, including HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales, as well as HH The Sultan of Brunei and HM The Sultan of Oman.

The Race That Never Was by Susan Crawford. Susan Crawfords latest limited edition depicts the famous race that never was between two of the greatest flat horses of our time. In August 2000, Sheikh Mohammed, the owner of Dubai Millennium, challenged Michael Tabor, the owner of Montjeu. to an old-fashioned head-to-head match over ten furlongs between the two superstar colts, with a purse of $6 million to the winner. However, just twenty-four hours later, Dubai Millennium broke his right hind leg in training at Newmarket and effectively ended his career. The eagerly anticipated match had to be abandoned. Owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammeds Godolphin Racing, Dubai Millennium won nine out of ten career starts, including triumphant victories in the Prince of Waless Stakes at Ascot in June 2000 and the $6 million Dubai World Cup in March 2000, failing to win only the Epsom Derby. Montjeu, bred by Sir James Goldsmith and trained by John Hanmond, has already been victrious in a number of big races, including the Prix de lArc de Triomphe at Longchamps in October 1999 and the King,George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot in July 2000. In her depiction of the Race That Never Was. Susan Crawford has painted Dubai Millennium, ridden by Frankie Dettori, and Montjeu, ridden by Mick Kinane, neck and neck a furlong from home. Who won? We will never know. |
Lester by Susan Crawford. Susan Crawfords latest limited edition depicts legendary jockey Lester Piggott in the colours of the late Lord Howard de Walden, for whom he rode 39 winners. Lord Howard de Walden was a good friend and patron and this subject was painted by the artist in his memory. The original painting was auctioned in November 2000 to raise money for The Sir Peter OSullevan Charitable Trust. The Trust benefits six animal welfare charities around the world: The Blue Cross, the Brooke Hospital for Animals in Cairo, Compassion in World Farming, the International League for the Protection of Horses, the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre and Racing Welfare Charities. |

Sadlers Wells by Susan Crawford. Born on the 11 April 1981, Sadler's Wells would go on to be trained at Ballydoyle by the Vincent O'Brien, one of the great race horse trainers of our time. Sadler's Wells would win six of his eleven starts from 7f to 10f. Sadler's Wells as a two-year-old won the General Assembly Maiden Stakes at Leopardstown over 7f and the Group 2 Panasonic Beresford Stakes at the Curragh over 8f. In 1984 he claimed the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Eclipse Stakes and inaugural Phoenix Champion Stakes. He was second in the Prix Du Jockey Club splitting Darshaan and Rainbow Quest, who would also become high-profile stallions and second in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. Sadly this great race horse died on 26th April 2011. |
