Steven Dews

Steven Dews was born in Yorkshire in 1949 and his meteoric rise to success from distinctly unpromising beginnings should be an inspiration to all young artists. From being the boy who failed his art A Level, his work has now placed him at the pinnacle of the marine art world. Steven Dews has been the official artist for the British Americas Cup challenge team and his many official commissions have included paintings to record the 150th anniversary of the New York Yacht Club and an Australian Government commission to record the bicentennial celebrations in Sydney Harbour. His paintings combine his mastery in oil of the natural elements of the sea and sky with the precision and accuracy of his depictions of ships and boats under sail. Above all, coming from a family with generations of links to the sea, Steven Dews lives and loves the subject he paints.

Rolex Swan Regatta (Crackerjack, Rounding the Buoy) by Steven Dews

Crackerjack, a Swan 46 racing yacht is seen racing around the East Lepe buoy in the Solent during the challenging Rolex Swan European Regatta in 1997. Due to the light winds, courses were kept short during the regatta, which allowed for plenty of close action for the large Class 1 yachts such as Highland Fling, Sotto Voce and Dark Swan. However, Crackerjack kept the pressure on the larger yachts and in recent years has won many prizes. She made a stunning sight, beating up the boisterous Solent during this breezy battle.

Velsheda - Sail Trials on the Solent by Steven Dews

After a distinguished racing career in the 1930s, Velsheda languished for many years on a mud berth on the Hamble. Eventually sold, her new owner set about rebuilding her with the latest rig, sail technology and deck hardware. The result was the creation of a yacht which is both fast but which retains her classic racing pedigree. Velsheda was relaunched on 3rd September 1997 and she spent several weeks on the sail trials on the Solent.
