Viscount Outbound by Ivan Berryman. First flown in 1948, the Vickers Viscount was the first turbopop commercial airliner to enter service anywhere in the world. Renowned for its comfort, quietness and large windows, it became one of the most successful and profitable aircraft of the post-war era. British European Airways added a large number of Viscounts to their fleet, starting in April 1953, the type continuing for many decades before being finally withdrawn from BEA's successor, British Airways, in the 1980s. Many examples continued to fly with other airlines and charter companies and several examples are preserved in museums. |
Concorde Farewell by Michael Rondot. Concorde made supersonic history, bringing Mach 2 international travel in luxury surroundings at the edge of space to millions of air travellers. It is instantly recognisable, but Concorde is far more than just a sleek and pretty aircraft. Its sheer size, combined with the glorious power and noise of its Olympus engines endow Concorde with a unique charisma. There is no other aircraft capable of stopping people in their tracks and making them look to the sky in awe like Concorde taking off in full reheat. |
Clipper Virginia at Tempelhof by Ivan Berryman. Douglas DC-6B N6103C Clipper Virginia of Pan American World Airways is depicted at Berlin's Tempelhof airport in the mid 1960s. This aircraft continued flying with various operators right up until 1978 when it was damaged beyond economical repair at San Juan airport in Puerto Rico, having overrun the runway. |
