David Rowlands has had a passion for sketching British soldiers and their equipment ever since he was a boy. After completing his studies at Manchester University in 1977, he joined the staff of the Reading Room at the National Army Museum, working full-time as a professional artist. Keenly interested in the history of British campaigns, uniforms and tactics, he has painted many historical battle scenes with great attention to accuracy and detail. This has resulted in widespread recognition of his work with the result that he has been commissioned to record the activities of many Regiments in the present day. These commissions have taken him frequently to Northern Ireland, as well as Germany, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Gibraltar. In 1991 David Rowlands was the only artist invited by the Army to visit the Gulf. Attached to a Warrior crew of 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, he observed the work of the various Arms at first hand, enabling him to complete many accurate paintings for Regiments and Corps engaged in the conflict. Early in 1993 he was the first war artist to visit Bosnia and record the British troops in Operation GRAPPLE 1. Invited by Headquarters National Support Element, he travelled extensively on convoys and sketched the operations from Split to Vitez and Travnik. Several paintings have been commissioned by the participating units, including one of 7 Armoured Workshop REME at Gornji Vakul. Over the past ten years David has been sent regularly to Iraq and Afghanistan for projects involving many of the British and Nato forces. He has probably spent as much time overseas gathering information for these projects as he has spent in the UK. He is certainly one of the major military artists of the past 20 years. Many of these fine paintings are now available as signed edtion art prints and canvases.

Sergeant-Major Darren Leigh MC, 1st Battalion The Queens Lancashire Regiment by David Rowlands. On 9th August 2003 there was widespread and violent disorder across Basrah due to fuel and electricity shortages. In the suburb of At Tannumah a large crowd gathered outside the Iraqi police station. While his company commander sought support from the Iraqi police, Company Sergeant-Major Leigh, with only some 30 soldiers and three vehicles, faced a crowd 300 strong. The rioters were throwing a hail of bricks, then surged forward in an attempt to overwhelm the police station. Sergeant-Major Leighs small force held them back, but came under small arms fire from gunmen behind the crowd. Despite the disparity in numbers, and sensing that his small party of Queens Lancashires were isolated on the far bank of the Shatt Al Arab, with reinforcement unlikely, Sergeant-Major Leigh seized the initiative by rapidly advancing into the crowd to disperse them. One of three grenades thrown by the Iraqis wounded him in the legs. Despite his injuries he led his 30 men in the subsequent baton charge against the mob, which so unnerved the rioters that they were forced to withdraw and eventually disperse as darkness fell. For his quick thinking, courage under fire, and determination despite his wounds, Sergeant-Major Leigh was awarded the Military Cross. |
Urban Dasht by David Rowlands. A Combat Logistic Patrol establishes a desert laager for the night, following protracted CLP operations into the Green Zone, Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. Each CLP traveled in single file during the day, but in the evening would form up in three columns and halt. The personnel immediately carry out clearance drills, searching for IEDs by sweeping the ground around their vehicles with Vallon detectors. A Support Vehicle (Recovery) of the REME with its crane is working to repair a vehicle. The leading vehicles in the column at the right of our view are Royal Engineer assets comprising the Talisman system. A Mastiff command-post with mast-mounted electro-optic sensors has a Remote Weapon System. Behind it is a JCB High Mobility Engineer Excavator; behind it are more RE vehicles including a Buffalo. The leading Mastiffs are also fitted with the SPARK - Self Protection Adaptive Roller Kit for protection against mines and pressure-initiated IEDs. There are some areas of urban desert; that is, in close vicinity of the population but still very much in a desert landscape. Dasht means plain or desert. |

40 Commando Royal Marines by David Rowlands. Capturing the Manifold Metering Station (MMS) on the Al Faw peninsula, Iraq. During Operation TELIC, the liberation of Iraq, on the night of 20th March 2003, 40 Commando Royal Marines, under the command of Lt Col G K Messenger OBE, mounted an amphibious helicopter assault to seize key Iraqi oil infrastructure on the Al Faw peninsula. It took around five hours from H hour until the area was deemed secure, and this painting shows the scene at first light on 21st March. As the first conventional troops on the ground, the strategic significance of the operation was immense. The Commando Group's role in the success of the coalition operation in Iraq was pivotal and profound. In a two-week period of intense operations, it secured vital oil installations, cleared a large expanse of enemy held terrain, and defeated a major enemy stronghold on the outskirts of Basra, killing over 150 Iraqi soldiers and taking 440 prisoners. |

The Battle of Culloden, 16th April 1746 by David Rowlands. The Kings Regiment positioned behind the Leanach dyke, opens a deadly flanking fire on the Highlanders of the Atholl Brigade, on the right wing of the Jacobite Army, under the command of Colonel William Barrell, played a significant role on the British Royal Army's left flank. They were positioned on rising ground, protected by a dyke, and their fire inflicted heavy casualties on the charging Highlanders of the Atholl Brigade. The regiment suffered considerable losses, with Lieutenant Colonel Robert Rich losing a hand and nearly losing his other arm. |
