David Rowlands has had a passion for sketching British soldiers and their equipment ever since he was a boy. After completing his studies at Manchester University in 1977, he joined the staff of the Reading Room at the National Army Museum, working full-time as a professional artist. Keenly interested in the history of British campaigns, uniforms and tactics, he has painted many historical battle scenes with great attention to accuracy and detail. This has resulted in widespread recognition of his work with the result that he has been commissioned to record the activities of many Regiments in the present day. These commissions have taken him frequently to Northern Ireland, as well as Germany, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Gibraltar. In 1991 David Rowlands was the only artist invited by the Army to visit the Gulf. Attached to a Warrior crew of 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, he observed the work of the various Arms at first hand, enabling him to complete many accurate paintings for Regiments and Corps engaged in the conflict. Early in 1993 he was the first war artist to visit Bosnia and record the British troops in Operation GRAPPLE 1. Invited by Headquarters National Support Element, he travelled extensively on convoys and sketched the operations from Split to Vitez and Travnik. Several paintings have been commissioned by the participating units, including one of 7 Armoured Workshop REME at Gornji Vakul. Over the past ten years David has been sent regularly to Iraq and Afghanistan for projects involving many of the British and Nato forces. He has probably spent as much time overseas gathering information for these projects as he has spent in the UK. He is certainly one of the major military artists of the past 20 years. Many of these fine paintings are now available as signed edtion art prints and canvases.

Helmand Vikings by David Rowlands. 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment 'The Vikings' deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan between April and October 2007. The Vikings were engaged in fighting the Taliban in the 'green zone' and desert of Helmand on a daily basis. Nine 'Vikings' lost their lives. The picture shows the lead section of the assaulting platoon, tasked to enter and clear a compound, after a Sapper of the Royal Engineers has used a bar mine or a mousehole charge to blow a hole in the wall. In this Company-level operation they are covered by a GPMG and a Sharpshooter with a 308 sniper rifle. Recce Platoon (in Scimitars) and Fire Support Group (in WMIKs) are in support, on the higher ground beyond the road. |

The Battle of Quebec, 13th September 1759 by David Rowlands. Captain W Macleods Company, 1st Battalion Royal Artillery. Battle of Quebec 13th September 1759 was Wolfs final attempt to take the city. His army scaled the cliffs from Wolfes cove and fought the French army which was larger than Wolfes on the Plains of Abraham. During this battle General Wolfe was hit twice and eventually mortally wounded when a bullet passed through his lungs. As he lay dying he heard someone shout They run - see how they run. Wolfe gave his last order to cut of the enemies retreat and his last words being Now God be praised. I will die in peace. |

William Pepperell supported by an English Fleet under Commander Peter Warren. Attacked the Fortress of Louisbourg on April 30th 1745 and finally captured the fortress on June 17th. A great British Victory which endangered the French position in North America. The fortifications were handed back to France in 1748 in the treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle. |

The Battle of Imjin, Crash Action by David Rowlands. On 25th April 1951, Lieutenant John Mole, in command of the remaining section of the Royal Ulster Rifles 3 inch mortars, dismounted in the open and replied with rapid mortar fire on to the slopes from which a hail of machine-gun fire swept the valley floor. The surviving tanks of C Squadron the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars kept up a heavy fire on the Chinese formations swarming down the valley slopes. |
