| Horatio McCulloch |
Scottish landscape artist who was born in Glasgow in 1805. He was named by his Father after Horatio Nelson. Horatio McCulloch studied under the great John Knox (1778 to 1845) for a year, and worked for a period of time painting pictures on the lids of snuff boxes in Cumnock, then moved to Edinburgh to become an illustrator. It was here he was heavily influenced by the works of John Thompson. In 1827 Horatio McCulloch returned to Glasgow and established himself as a landscape artist and in 1838 returned to work in Edunburgh. One of his specialities was the Scottish Highlands where he would visit regualrly, and many of his paintings are of this scenic area. Many of these fine Scottish landscape paintings are displayed in many Scottish art galleries. Horatio McCulloch was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1838, and passed away in 1867 |
