Our Cuirassiers Have Burst on the Ranks of the Accurst by William Henry Charles Groome (PC) The Battle of Naseby took place on the 14th of June 1645, near the village of Naseby in Northamptonshire The Parliamentarians, led by Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell engaged with the Royalist army led by Charles I and Prince Rupert. Depicted here, Charles is leading his forces to battle. The Battle was a major success for the Parliamentarians, effectively destroying most of Charles's forces. |

Outpost of the New Model Army on the Eve of the Battle of Naseby by Ernest Crofts. The New Model Army was formed in 1645 by the Parliamentarians during English Civil War, and was disbanded in 1660 after the Restoration. It differed from the other armies in the Civil war in that it was intended as an army where its soldeirs were liable for service anywhere in the country, instead of restricted to a local area or garrison. This meant that the soldiers of the new Model Army would be full time professional soldiers instead of part time militia. It was also intended that its officers were to be professional soldiers, not having seats in either the Houses of Lords or Commons. Here a Cavalry sentry is shown before the battle of Naseby, which would become a key battle of the English Civil War. On 14th June 1645, the main army of King Charles I was completely destroyed by the Parliamentarian New Model Army under the command of Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell. |
The Battle of Naseby - Fairfax Triumphant The Battle of Naseby on the 14th of June 1645 all but decided the outcome of the English Civil War. As the sun set on a dramatic day, the Oxford field army of King Charles I had been comprehensively beaten and completely destroyed. The King had shown considerable personal courage during the battle, however, his cause was not helped by Prince Ruperts infamous attack on the baggage train which meant that the day was lost before he could return to the field. Superbly authentic battle reconstructions and atmospheric re-enactments provide an informative and entertaining view of a troubled time in English history. Narrated by Ian Brooker. |
